Corn-y

Yep, yep – the posts are few and far between, and super short when I even manage to get around to it. What a sad turn of events for the 1 year anniversary of starting this whole thing.  I had really hoped to keep up with it better… then life kept happening.

But we are still here, I am trying to remember to post when funny things happen, and at this point I will take getting something up once a month as a huge accomplishment!

And when tibits like this come out of Soapfi’s mouth it makes it a wee bit easier to do.

Today we went to visit grandma, there are a lot of turns around corners as we wind our way up to her house. We were just going around the last one when Soapfi exclaimed:

“We need to turn more corners!!!”

When I asked why she replied:

“So we can finish our corn field!”

I’m still not sure if she was trying to be funny or if she really thinks that turning corners is where corn comes from!

Adrenaline Junkie

Over the weekend we did the pumpkin patch thing.  We happen to live very close to a great place that we go to every year: Carlton Farms.  Each year they get better, and this year was no exception.

We sprang for the $5 pass to get Soapfi into the Kid Korral. Worth. Every. Penny!

Can you say kiddie zip line? Soapfi was hooked after the first ride – it was a litany of “again Daddy” for at least 30 minutes!  She was probably one of the littlest kids giving it a try, but was giving the biggest shouts of “whhhheeeeeeee” and unrestrained giggles.

I’m hoping this bodes well for my planned attempt to get her on skis in the near future!

Safety First

So yeah, I’ve been a bad blogger who seems to have fallen off the map – I blame it on the #*$%!(@ Robot Hats. Niche success is a double edged sword.  I’ve been more wildly successful than I ever thought possible, and now have zero free time. So things will be sporadic for awhile, but I’m still here, I will be back, Soapfi is still being impossibly cute, and when I remember and find the time I will share.

The thing that prompted me to make the time was playing “school bus” today Soapfi was adamant that we all “buckle in for safety” before she even turned the imaginary key.  Now if should would only remember safety first before running across the linoleum in the kitchen with her socks on!

Goosey Head

So Soapfi has apparently lost interest in ducks, because she has revised a classic game and abolished all mention of them.  She now just keeps walking around the circle, bopping people on the head and giggling “Goosey Head”!

Your Moneys Is My Moneys

Without fail, at 7pm every Sunday, all summer long, the ICE CREAM MAN drives through our neighborhood. (And for some strange reason plays Christmas music.) Since Soapfi has bionic hearing, her head immediately pops up, she does that whole eyes open wide – mouth in an “O” expression, and she squeals in pure delightful anticipation.

Last Sunday was no exception. However, since 7pm last Sunday was post family picnic (see here for the litany of all she had eaten that afternoon!) a visit with the ice cream man was not in her cards. Since she can hear him from so bloody far down the block there was plenty of time for her to attempt to negotiate.

Explaining she had already had plenty of treats that day, she countered with “I’m still hungry”. Offering her fruit or cheese was countered with “I don’t want fruit and cheese”. So I finally said that Mommy didn’t have any money, and asked if Soapfi had her own money so she could buy ice cream. Soapfi immediately excitedly responded that yes, indeed, she did have her own money. (Which came as a shock to Mommy, as I know she doesn’t have a piggy bank yet, and she knows the difference between real money and her fake play money)

So she hopped down off her chair, marched up to Daddy held out her little hands and stated “Give me my moneys”!

Bounce on Over

Sometimes life is a picnic, or in the case of our weekend and upcoming week, a series of picnics!

The first was a block party picnic in Grandma’s neighborhood on Saturday – complete with professionally catered BBQ, a dunk tank, the local fire department stopping by to show off their trucks, and a bouncy house! Soapfi had a blast.  She started out pretty chill (as always – takes her a bit to warm up to new people), but quickly got into the spirit of things.

At first she just enjoyed bouncing around in the bouncy house, but eventually wanted to do what all the big kids were doing, and climbed to the top of the slide, all on her own, and gave it a whirl.  She is usually not one for slides, but she took to this one pretty quickly, and two dozen trips later still wanted more, more, more!  She was the sliding queen.

Somewhere along the way she managed to stuff herself full of BBQ pork, cornbread muffins, and of course chocolate chip cookie – which ended up more on her face than in it!

Not to be outdone, on Sunday we drove down south to attend our annual family picnic for Grandpa’s side of the family. Naturally Soapfi charmed the socks of everyone, and even overcame her initial shyness to give her Great-Great Aunt her 90th birthday card. (Please let me be even HALF as feisty and fun to be around at 90 as my Great Aunt Elsie – that woman is amazing!)

Four slices of watermelon, one banana, at least two dozen grapes, some angel food cake & ice cream, one hot dog, two slices of ham, a smattering of baked beans and two lollipops later she conked out for the two plus hour ride home!

My work picnic on Thursday has some pretty big picnic shoes to fill!

Bad Cinematography

We have a *very* cheap, carry it in your back pocket, people laugh at us and don’t take us seriously, video camera. It works moderately well inside, sometimes things are a little on the dark side, no matter how many 100 bazillion watt light bulbs we turn on, and it seems to pick up background sounds better than Soapfi’s voice even when she is two inches away. All that being said, it serves it’s purpose and has captured memories we will eventually treasure forever and share with the GPs… once I figure out how to use Movie Maker better, or break down and purchase “real” video editing software.

This weekend we discovered a new limitation on the video camera – it actually works like complete crap outdoors. Granted there was some “Micheal J Fox off his Parkinson’s meds” (too soon?) cinematography going on by the hubby – but the camera would just go bat shit crazy over the slightest changes in the natural lighting. And the teeny tiny LCD screen shows you jack in sunlight, so half the time he was either filming dirt, the top part of the fence, or what seems to be a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. Which makes me sad, because we had sooooo much fun doing yard work as a family, and thought we had captured some fun stuff on camera.

Alas, Soapfi’s first encounter with a worm will have to live here in old fashioned text form with no pictures. We were turning over the dirt in the raised beds when we found one of the longest, fattest, and *fastest* earthworms I’ve seen. It was nearly nine inches long and it cruised around the outside of the garden bed at Mach 5. Soapfi was dutifully scooping up dirt from one bed and bringing it to another to “help” (aka making a dirt trail through the crushed rock between the beds). She spotted the worm, softly whispered “oh boy, look”, started hissing, and then greeted the worm with “hello snake”. (We have apparently not exposed her to enough Richard Scarry books with the little worm guy.) After watching the worm cruise along the edge of the bed getting farther away from her, she dumped her little shovel full of dirt on top of him and cheerfully waved “bye bye snake”. I’m not sure if I should just settle with being amused, or concerned for when she encounters a *real* snake – luckily snakes, not even garter snakes, aren’t all that common around our place.

I was able to salvage some bits and pieces of video, poorly edited, for your viewing pleasure:

Cheers!

Soafi is more and more fun every day. Her imagination continues to grow, and her curiosity is unrelenting. Her current thing is “Juice Party”, which is basically her version of Tea Party. She has yet to involve her stuffed animals, but has found willing accomplices in Mommy and Daddy.

We drink a lot of fake juice from tea light holders. She has basically taken over the cabinet full of my Partylite hardware and has turned it into what she considers the best juice serving set ever! She will pour and serve juice for hours on end if it wasn’t for pesky things like eating and diaper changes.

Her favorite part is clinking the “glasses” together and saying “Cheers”. It sends her into unrelenting giggle fits, which of course make us start to giggle, and it just goes from there. She gets very exuberant when toasting, the force transferred between the cups makes your hands sting! I made a few futile attempts to take pictures as all this toasting transpired, but all I captured were some silver blurs!

If you need some juice, just swing by our place, we have plenty!
